Life Cycle Assessment
Life Cycle Assessment: From seed to vault
To measure the true climate impact of our project, we use a rigorous "Cradle-to-Grave" approach. From the moment a Norway spruce begins to grow as a seed until long after the building above it has disappeared.
For every tonne of CO₂ removed, 0.94 tonnes are net removed from the atmosphere.
Life phases
The four phases of our LCA
Forestry
We work with PEFC-certified partners in the Ardennes (such as Huet Group). We conservatively account for emissions from chainsaws, harvesting machines and diesel transport. The Ardennes were chosen because this wood source is closest to our project locations in the Netherlands.
Transport
This phase calculates the emissions from timber transport from the Ardennes to the Dutch construction site. We include all logistical steps in our calculations.
Installation
Various machines are needed to install the wooden piles. The emissions of all these machines are fully included in our LCA calculation.
Removal
The wood rests safely in anoxic (oxygen-free), boggy peat or clay, keeping the carbon safely removed for more than 100 years. We continuously monitor this state based on groundwater levels.
